IN DIJON, FRANCE 25TH - 28TH JUNE 2009
A new International President was elected.
WALBURGA HABSBURG DOUGLAS, born in Germany but now resident in Sweden and a member of the Swedish Parliament
Mrs. Ingrid-Tichy-Schreder, from Austria, our esteemed President for the past six years retired at this meeting. We thank her both for her friendship towards the British Section and her leadership of E.U.W. during this time.
Research work carried out in the International Workshops and Commissions was discussed and resolutions formulated, reflecting women's opinions across Europe.
A new theme for research over the coming two years was agreed.
OBSERVERS AT THE GENERAL ELECTION, 2010
Under the auspices of the Westminster Foundatiion for Democracy, EUW hosted two groups of three women to observe the last week of campaiging for the General Election.Our guests were from Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia . The visitors were based in Battersea, London and in Stroud, Gloucestershire, where they were hosted by members of EUW.
During their visit they were able to observe the candidates campaigning and saw them meeting the press and debating with candidates from the other Parties. They met and exchanged views with Returning Officers and Local Councillors and were pleased to meet the Mayor of a local town. Some were able to observe the opening of postal votes and also attended the Count. During election day our guests saw how an election is conducted and were able to participate in the excitement of the event.
