Spring Lunch Speaker
Rt Hon Alistair Burt, Pro-Chancellor Lancaster University, is an expert on the complex politics and relationships of the Middle East. He is the former UK Under Secretary of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office for the Middle East, North Africa, North America and South Asia and Minister of State at the Department for International Development. He has been the UK Commissioner to the International Commission on Missing Persons and continues to work with Middle Eastern conflict resolution group Forward Thinking. Alistair frequently writes for national newspapers and appears as a Middle East expert of national television.
The Venue
The Reform Club is a beautiful, historic venue which reminds us of Britain’s advance towards democracy in the 19th century. It was founded in 1836 for those who pledged support for the Great Reform Act of 1832, and evolved as their political headquarters before becoming the politically neutral place for critical thinking and intellectual discourse that it is today. We’re delighted, therefore, that the Spring Lunch will be held in the gold leafed Library, home to many of the Club’s finest books. The Library runs the entire length of the building and faces south overlooking Carlton Gardens and is described as “the most handsome room in the Club and is considered to be one of the finest interiors in London.” (source: www.reformclub.com/Private_Events/Club_Rooms).
