It is becoming increasingly clear that burning fossil fuels is creating a toxic environment for our minds. A warming world is increasing traumatic exposures to extreme weather and climate events that are creating and worsening mental health challenges and deaths by suicide. Meanwhile the conditions need for good mental health and wellbeing become increasingly undermined, with the climate crisis multiplying the risks of food and water insecurity, conflict, polluted air, disrupted access to education and healthcare, and forced migration. Those most vulnerable include women, children and young people. Awareness of the severity of the threats faced and the insufficient actions of leaders brings its own distress. These experiences can be overwhelming and cripple the ability of individuals and communities to cope with and act on the threats faced.
The climate crisis, and action to prevent it, depend heavily on human psychology and behaviour. There is the opportunity to harness climate concerns into collective action that can itself benefit mental health and wellbeing. Strong and active communities, equal societies, cleaner air and greener cities can help create a world that's safer for our climate and our minds. It's time to tap into the power of emotion and imagination, and the strength of our care for each other, to turn the vicious cycle to a virtuous one.
This talk will explore the intersections of climate change and mental health, with a particular focus on women and children, and drawing on the insights of the Wellcome-funded Connecting Climate Minds initiative. CCM brought together over 900 people across over 80 countries and created agendas for research and action through over 22 dialogues and events.
